The Benefits of Walnut Consumption for Brain Health

Walnuts are truly beneficial for the brain. Their composition consists of approximately 15% protein, 65% fat, and around 15% carbohydrates. The fats found in walnuts differ from the saturated fats that contribute to coronary heart disease. In addition, walnuts contain simpler molecules known as polyphenols, such as ferulic acid and vanillic acid. A key property of these polyphenols is their antioxidant effect.

During cellular respiration, about 1% of the oxygen used by cells is converted into harmful oxygen radicals. Antioxidant polyphenols help prevent the formation of these damaging radicals. Although the brain accounts for roughly 2% of total body weight, it consumes about 20% of the body’s oxygen due to its high metabolic activity. Therefore, walnuts—being rich in polyphenols that counteract harmful oxygen radicals—can truly be considered a beneficial food for brain health.
