Is It Possible to Prevent Diseases Through Healthy and Regular Nutrition

Healthy and balanced nutrition plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of both neurological diseases and cancer. Vitamin E, also known as alpha-tocopherol, helps reduce the formation of cancer by decreasing free oxygen radicals and also slows the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Lycopene and carotene, found in dark orange-colored vegetables, are particularly important. Lycopene in tomatoes has strong preventive properties against prostate cancer. Carotene in carrots is converted into vitamin A in the body. In addition to being essential for retinal function and vision, vitamin A is increasingly recognized for its role in brain development during pregnancy.

Selenium is a trace element that reduces the risk of nearly all cancers and can be obtained through diet. Its deficiency has been associated with various cancers and with Keshan disease—a type of heart disease (a form of congestive cardiomyopathy) first identified in the Keshan region of China. Therefore, adequate selenium intake is important for preventing both cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Adequate iodine intake during pregnancy is critically important for brain development. Deficiency can lead to a condition called cretinism in children, characterized by short stature and impaired cognitive development. Iodine is also important for brain health in adults, as deficiency may lead to problems with attention and concentration.
